Phone Chat Etiquette

Texting, emailing, and instant messaging have taken over from the good old days of just talking on the phone. But there’s something to be said for having a real conversation. For one thing, a phone conversation is much harder to misunderstand than an email or a message. Talking is connecting folks. That’s the truth.

There’s also something to be said for abiding by good old-fashioned phone etiquette! Not even sure what that is? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Follow these five basic rules and blow your phone chat partners away with your awesomeness:

1. Properly Introduce Yourself

Don’t just say, “Hi, how are ya?” If you’re talking to someone for the first time, it’s plain decent to give them a little more information about yourself. Things like what you do for a living, what you have planned for the weekend, and what sorts of things you like are all nice to know and will give you guys something to chat about!

2. Save the Chores for After your Chat

Seriously, put down the laundry basket, leave your computer alone for a minute, and just chat! There’s nothing quite so rude asking someone to “hang on a minute” while you are on the phone, or worse having to call them back. Make sure when you are chatting that it’s all you are doing — period.

3. Leave the Swearing to the Sailors

Didn’t your mama ever tell you not to cuss? It’s not polite. It’s not attractive. You’re not a bad boy or girl, you’re just lazy. Think of another word to use instead of dropping the F-bomb like it’s 1945. Why? Because it’s gosh-darn offensive.

4. One and a Half Inches is Just Right

Try to keep the receiver of your phone one and a half inches away from your mouth while you’re chatting. This is the ideal distance, as calculated back in the day, to ensure you are being heard loud and clear, but not too loud. What did you think we were talking about anyway?

5. Listen

This is a simple one really. Just listen. Pay attention to your chat while you are chatting. Participate in the conversation at hand. A lady loves to be listened to as does a man. Listening is a very attractive quality and will win you all sorts of personal points.
